The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. The round head (ball) of the upper arm bone fits into a shallow socket in the shoulder. Damage to the joint can cause pain, weakness and stiffness.
Shoulder replacement removes damaged areas of bone and replaces them with parts made of metal and plastic implants. This surgery is called shoulder arthroplasty (ARTH-row-plas-tee).
The most common reasons for a shoulder replacement surgery are osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, avascular necrosis or rheumatoid arthritis. The procedure will relieve your pain, improve your strength, increase your range of motion and enable you to use your shoulder and arm.
There are three types of shoulder replacement surgeries:
• Partial shoulder replacement: Only the ball gets replaced.
• Total shoulder replacement: This is the most common type. It replaces the ball at the top of your humerus with a metal ball, which gets attached to the remaining bone. The socket gets covered with a new plastic surface.
• Reverse shoulder replacement: Usually, you would get this type of surgery if you have a torn rotator cuff. It is also done when another shoulder replacement surgery didn not work. The metal ball gets attached to your shoulder bones, and a socket is implanted at the top of your arm.
